Emulator IIIProject Alan
A complete study of the 1987 sampler, a modern rebuild of its CPU and microcontroller boards, technical improvements and fully rewritten documentation.
Released in 1987, the Emulator III was one of the first 16-bit stereo samplers. It can be heard on a large part of late-80s pop and film music.
Today, the machines that still work suffer from unobtainable parts, failing drives and scattered documentation. This project gathers what is known, checks it on real hardware, and prepares replacement electronics.
Why “Alan”? In tribute to Alan Wilder, one of the machine’s most inventive users. The name covers the rebuild work: a new CPU board, a microcontroller and technical improvements.
